Using Phonics at an Early Age to Improve English Language Learning.

By Gimhani Niwanthika Abeygunawardana

As a teacher in the UK and a mother of two young sons, I have seen first-hand how powerful phonics can be when introduced at an early age. Phonics is not just a classroom strategy, it is a foundation that supports children’s confidence, communication, and long-term success in learning English.

In UK schools, phonics is a key part of the Early Years and Key Stage 1 curriculum, and for good reason. When children learn the relationship between sounds and letters early on, they begin to decode words rather than memorise them. This skill empowers them to read independently and approach new vocabulary with curiosity instead of fear.

At home, I have applied the same phonics-based approach with my sons. Simple activities such as sounding out words during story time, playing word games, and singing phonics songs have made learning enjoyable and natural. Rather than seeing reading as a task, my children view it as a fun and interactive part of daily life.

From a teacher’s perspective, phonics also supports children who are learning English as an additional language. It provides a clear structure for understanding pronunciation and spelling, helping learners make sense of a language that can otherwise feel inconsistent. Early exposure allows children to develop accurate speech patterns and stronger listening skills.

In my experience, starting phonics early creates confident readers, enthusiastic learners, and children who are eager to engage with language. Whether at school or at home, phonics remains one of the most effective tools we have to support young learners on their English language journey.
